What is Happening in Ohio Amish Country
August 1, 2006

Hi!

I got emails from several people who attended the barn raising on the the 15th.  Everyone seemed to enjoy watching this Amish tradition of helping a neighbor who has lost a barn.  And by the way, the labor is all donated.....they are not paid to do this!  Even though it was wet, the barns (yes more than 1) were raised in 1 day!  The picture above shows a few of the people who came to watch.

School will be starting soon, so I suspect the next couple weeks will be busy here with people squeezing in a few days vacation while they can.  The cost of gas apparently hasn't kept too many people away!  October is the busiest month, so if you are planning on coming then, you'd better get your reservations made NOW!

Hope you enjoy this issue!

Antiques Trading Post & Antiques in the Alley

I think I might have mentioned the Antiques Trading Post in Berlin when they were having their opening day recently.  Well, I finally had time to stop the other day and I really liked it.
The nice thing is, the owners are very particular about the items their vendors put in, so it keeps the quality they are looking for.

They have a nice selection of furniture, linens, pottery, tools, primitives, glassware and more.  The back half of the building will be opening soon, doubling their space.   The other nice thing is they are open on Sunday!!   That's good, 'cause a lot of people stay for the weekend then wonder what to do on Sunday.  They are also located right next to the Farmstead Restaurant and across from the Comfort Suites, so it is a good location!

Daily hours are Mon-Sat. 10-6:00, Sunday 11:00-3:00.

On August 12th, you will find Antiques in the Alley!  What's that?  It's a special sale and event in downtown Millersburg.  This will be held in the back alleys and on the sidewalks from 9:00-5:00, rain or shine with 30-50 vendors selling their wares.   You'll find everything from garden accents to folk art, primitives, art deco, and of course, great food!  FMI 330-763-2859 or hdm@valkyrie.net.

Graystone Cottages

I also took the time to stop at Graystone Cottages, located on N. Market St., in Berlin, right next to Walnut Creek Cheese.   Owner Jim Gray was kind enough to show me the Lavender Fields Cottage.  Very nice!  Can sleep 2-4 people with 1 bedroom and a sofa bed.  There's a kitchenette, jacuzzi, fireplace and full bath, and cold drinks and continental breakfast are provided.

Jim has a total of 4 cottages tucked back in off the
road.  He says this is where modern life and Amish
traditions meet!  He's right, because it is within
walking distance of all the shops in downtown
Berlin and there is a hitching rail out behind the
cottages!

The largest cottage, Lofty Places, has 2 bedrooms,
so it would be nice if 2 couples are traveling together.
It has 1 1/2 baths, jacuzzi, kitchenette, and a large
living area with a fireplace.

FMI, visit their website at www.graystone-cottages.com
or call toll free 877-231-2912.  Tell Jim you read about it here!

Buggy Rides

One of the things I get asked about quite often, are buggy rides.  There's an Amishman that gives rides in Berlin occasionally.  I think he said Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons (I lost the paper where I had written it down!)  Mr. Erb will put out his Buggy Rides sign and have his buggy sitting beside the Country Craft Cupboard.  If you don't see the sign on the pole, then he's not there giving rides!  He will actually take you out on the regular back roads, not just in the alleys.  The cost is by donation....whatever you feel it is worth.

His horse and buggy is probably the best marked I have seen in the area, including reflector tape on his horse's ankles.  He sometimes takes 2 horses in with him, so one can rest, get a drink and eat, while the other is "working".

Buggy rides are also available in Walnut Creek.  You need to check at the Carlisle Inn on times, cost, etc.
