February 1, 2008

Wow, where has January gone?  Although we haven't had a bad winter so far, I guess I am ready for spring.  We'll see what Mr. Groundhog has to say about it on Saturday!

The picture to the right is typical of this time of year....They leave the
corn shocks in the field until they are ready to take them in, chop
it and feed it to the animals.

I didn't make it to Berlin for the Pajama Party this year, but oh, my,
was it cold that morning!  I heard a friend say she saw ladies up in
Mt. Hope later, eat at Mrs. Yoder's  in their Pajamas.  I'll bet people
wondered what was going on!!

Have sold lots of maps lately.  I guess that means there will be a
lot of folks coming to Ohio Amish Country this year.

I had 2 people ask about electric fireplaces they had seen
advertised on TV as being made by the Amish in Ohio.
I was able to find out about them and have written a little bit below.

Remember that Chit Chat is published once a month Jan. - March.    Also a reminder that Chalet in the Valley Restaurant reopens the first of March.  Grandma's Alpine Homestead is closed this month, and Yoder's Amish Home, Rolling Ridge Farm, and the Amish Flea Market all open again in April.

Hope you enjoy this issue!

Heat Surge Fireplaces

I really didn't know anything about these fireplaces until a couple subscribers asked about them.  We happened to ask the right man at a benefit breakfast and he told us where it was located.  So we stopped in at the Heat Surge Outlet Store on US 62 near the SR 515 intersection to check them out.

We were pleasantly surprised to find really nice portable electric fireplaces.   It is very efficient and only costs about 12 cents/hr. to operate.  I was amazed at the amount of heat it put out on the high setting of 1500 watts.  They are on wheels so you can move them room to room.

The company that sells them is from Canton.  The metal insert is probably imported from China, but the oak or cherry cabinets are made here in Holmes County just like they say in their ads.  You can even get a remote control for an extra fee.  They were nice and if I had a place for one, would probably get one.

Berlin Hotel& Suites

My husband and I went to the Open House for Berlin Hotel
& Suites on Tuesday night.  Oh, my! Is it ever nice! It used
to be called Amish Country Inn and is located just west of
Berlin behind the CR201 and SR39 intersection.  There
used to be a Fitness Center right next to it: That was purchased
and has been incorporated into the whole structure,
including the nice indoor pool, spa and salon.

Rooms range from several economy rooms to the luxury suites
with the large plasma TVs, down pillows and comforters, jacuzzi, etc.
wireless internet and state of the art conference center.  You can have a free Continental breakfast or Room service.  There's even  a 30 seat theater where they will be showing movies for their guests (pictured here). Surround sound system, lounge type seats with cup holders, etc.  This is just another reason to come to Holmes County!!

Check them out at www.berlinhotelandsuites.com or call 800-935-5218.

Alphorn Amish Gifts

I have had many people tell me that when they come to Amish Country they want to buy gifts and items made by the Amish.  That's pretty much how I would feel, too.  So it is disappointing to come here and find "Made in China" on the bottom of something you purchased.  Unfortunately, we see too much of this any more, with the Amish being just as guilty as the English.

So when I saw the ad for Alphorn Amish Gifts in the newspaper, I was very pleased.  They advertise Amish made products, which include baskets, candles, jams & jellies, small furniture, maple syrup, framed pictures and more.  They also have non-Amish products which would include cheeses and mustards, coffees, CDs of local artists, lamps, etc.

Alphorn Amish Gifts is located at 115 E. Main St. in downtown Sugarcreek.  330-852-0292.

Other stores that have locally made items are Sol's Crafts, Kit 'n Kaboodle, Helping Hands Quilt Shop and The Harvest  Moon, all in Berlin.
