December 15, 2007

Hello!

Who can believe there are only 10 days till Christmas? It's amazing! I want to take this
opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a great 2008!

We will be leaving next week to go to Illinois to spend Christmas with our kids and Grandkids.  Just hope the weather co-operates and we don't have an experience like our son did the night before Thanksgiving.

We have had some interesting weather so far and the forecast for today isn't good.  I suggest you check the weather stations or radar before coming.  We are far enough away from Cleveland that we usually don't get the effect from Lake Erie.

Naturally, most stores and shops will be closed on Christmas day.  The Amish actually celebrate Christmas twice.  December 25th and January 6th, which is called Old Christmas or Epiphany.  It is a day for visiting family and friends.  Normally all the Amish businesses are closed for Old Christmas, but since it falls on a Sunday, and they will not be open anyway, it shouldn't affect your shopping in the area.

Once again, may the joy of His birth bring you peace and happiness all the year through.

Reminder: Chit Chat only comes out once a month January through March.  Next issue will be Jan. 2.
Also, remember that today, the 15th,  the Amish Flea Market closes for the season, reopening in the spring.

Heini's Gourmet Market

A couple days ago I stopped in Sugarcreek at the new Heini's
Gourmet Market.  Yes, this is the same Heini's that has the
Cheese Chalet at Bunker Hill; the originator of yogurt cheese.....
a cheese that can be eaten by folks who are lactose intolerant.

Heini's uses all 100% Amish Farm milk which is guaranteed
free of artificial growth hormones.  Besides that, it tastes good!

The new shop is wide open and beautiful.  They even have an
area where they will be doing various types of cooking
demonstrations.  See pictures to the right.

Of course, Heini's is famous for all their
cheese samples and this is no different.  I got to sample several
types of hot, delicious gourmet coffee, as well as specialty
cheese balls and crackers, and several different dips and sauces.

Heini's Gourmet Market is located on SR 39 just northwest of
the Intersection of SR 93.  N-11 on your Amish Highways and
Byways Map.

Another tidbit of information.....In the same building, lower level
and at the back is the Harvest Thrift Shop.  I had never been in
there.  It is very clean, and well organized.

Sleigh Rides

When I see the snow I think of sleigh rides......Can't you just feel the cold air on your face as you slide through the snow?  Hear the bells jingling on the horses?  Followed by a steaming cup of hot chocolate? Now that sounds like fun!!  It's something I have never done, but have always wanted to do.

I know that the Guggisberg Swiss Inn offers sleigh rides to their guests.  This is of course, dependent on the snowfall.  They are located on SR 557 on the road to Charm, just beyond Guggisberg Cheese Factory.

Hillcrest Orchard

I love getting the old fashioned un-pasteurized cider at Hillcrest Orchard just west of Walnut Creek.  Just wanted to let you know that they will remain open through the winter so you can still go there to get fresh cider made daily.  They will close the end of March when they have to get ready for the new season.
You can get other things besides cider.

They have really good prices on their mixed nuts, pecans, walnuts, and they make and sell their own apple butter, which is really good.  They also have cheese, eggs, Trail bologna, etc.

They are located on TR 444, just east of Der Dutchman Restaurant.  If you go down in the valley, you missed it!!  It's only about a mile back on TR 444.  Closed Sundays.
