November-December 2008

Greetings from Ohio Amish Country:

As we approach the holiday season in November and December, this newsletter highlights the Ohio Amish Country events for both months.  This list of events is longer than usual.  Be sure to visit our calendar of events on the www.ohioamishcountry.com website.

It is a special season-changing time of the year to visit Ohio Amish Country.  Our forests still have fall colors, but the leaves are dropping with the changing temperatures and morning frosts.  The outdoor recreation along the Mohican River Valley is closing for winter, although many are reading for hunting season.  The Mohican River Inn will be opening it restaurant and tavern just at the right time under new management.  It is located on Scenic Byway – Wally Road at the western boundary of Holmes County.  Visitors and residents are beginning to spend more time indoors enjoying the museums, dinner theaters, craft shows, dances, and the annual quilt shop hop.

Photographers!  Alert!  There is still plenty to see outdoors.  Many visitors are still coming to see the beautiful leaves that have turned colors in our wooded areas and rolling hills.  They are so very lovely this year.  Be sure to bring your cameras to capture the sights that will help you remember your trip to Amish Country.

The area farmers are finishing their harvest.  There have been apple butter stirrings and butchering days at Yoder’s Amish Home.  The shops in the area are ready to welcome you with many gift ideas for the coming holidays.  We have old fashioned Christmas shopping in Holmes County that will remind you of years gone past where living was simple and people found much pleasure in sharing time with family and friends.

Local schools and churches are reaching out  to ring in this year's holiday season.  Yes, we CELEBRATE the Christmas season here in Holmes County.  So, if you are longing for the simple bygone days of fun and fellowship, you will be most welcome at any of our events.  Tis the season that love abounds more than ever in Ohio Amish Country.

It should be duly noted that the Ohio Amish Country Happenings newsletter has not be published and distributed at a frequency to which long-term subscribers have been accustomed.  Accurate newsletter preparation is a time-consuming process. It is anticipated that this newsletter shall be published on a monthly basis in 2009.  I ask you to check the on-line calendar on the www.ohioamishcountry.com website to identify coming events.  Thank you for your continuing interest in the experiences be be gained in Ohio Amish Country.

To enhance your authentic experiences while visiting Ohio Amish Country, we are forging new partnerships locally to bring you opportunities to gain easier access to the "Best of Holmes County" products, locations, and services.  The Ohio Amish Country Visitor Center and Millersburg Glass Museum in Downtown Historic Millersburg, this website, and the Heritage Tourism Cooperative provide avenues to serve you throughout the year.

Below you will find a long list of visitor opportunities, sights, programs, and Ohio Amish Country “Happenings" for the next two months.  Come visit us in Holmes County and Ohio Amish Country as we strive to better serve you.

The 8th Annual Quilt Shop Hop

Date: October 29 to November 1, 2008
Location: Ohio Amish Country
For more information: visit www.hearthsidequiltshoppe.com

The Ohio Amish Country Quilt Shop Hop is an organized effort among twelve local quilt shops to coordinate and plan an even that enables residents and visitors to see the area’s wide variety of quilts and quilt makers and shops in an organized way.  This is a special treat for individuals to gather and appreciate the craft of quilting.  Be sure to allow time to enjoy what each shop has to offer.  As you drive from shop to shop, take time to enjoy the rolling hills and landscapes of Ohio Amish Country.

This year’s theme is Pineberry Creek. The fabrics and patterns are all coordinated to represent this theme. Quilters are given a passport at the first stop; they must have it stamped at each shop to be eligible to win prizes. Each hopper shall receive a free pattern and can purchase a fabric kit at each of the twelve shops. There will be additional project kits displayed using the theme fabrics along with demonstrations at the shops. Prizes (more than 1,000) are awarded throughout the four-day event, with a chance to win one of the many grand prizes given away.

Quilters come from near and far to participate in the shop hop. Participants come in cars, vans, and buses. Hoppers arrived from all over the United States and Canada last year, and more are expected this year. The 12 shops participating are: A Piece In Time of Akron, Country Craft Cupboard, Gramma Fannies Quilt Barn and Helping Hands Quilt Shop of Berlin, Hearthside Quilt Shoppe of Kidron, Country Charm Fabrics of Ashland, Lone Star Quilt Shop of Mt. Hope, Miller’s Dry Goods of Charm, Aunt Bee’s Quilts & More and Paw Patch Quilt Shop of Mt. Vernon, VacShak of Coshocton, and The Fabric Peddler of Wadsworth.

1 cup sugar
1/3 cup salt
1-2 T chili powder
