What is Happening in Ohio Amish Country
January 11, 2007

Hi!

Quick note.  I thought of a couple things I should mention before the next regular issue comes out the 1st of February.

First, if you are coming here this weekend, I found out that the Inn at Walnut Creek still has rooms available, at least as of this writing.  Because of the big 3 day basketball tournament, some places may be full.  The Inn at WC is really nice, and is within walking distance of one of our favorite places to eat, Der Dutchman.  So give them a call at 800-262-7181.  They are on Olde Pump St. across from the German Culture Museum.

Next, Keim Lumber in Charm has opened their HUGE new addition and on February 3rd will be hosting the Great American Outdoor Sportsman's Show.  I was just there today to check it out.  The Show will be held in the old part of the store, which they are now in the process of cleaning out.  There is a beautiful entrance to the new addition.  The new store is huge, complete with an eating area called the Carpenter's Cafe.  This is like no other lumber company that you've ever been to!!!

Next, Hershberger's Truck Patch is closed until Jan. 26th, while they put up a new addition.  Closed, that is, except for Saturday, January 20, when they will host a Benefit Breakfast for Sharp Run School, serving from 6:00 to 11:00 a.m.  We usually go to this.  Good food and a good way to support an Amish school.  (Hershberger's is located on the sharp curve on SR557, just about a mile south of SR39).

Also, Chalet in the Valley Restaurant is closed until March 15th.  This is the one across from Guggisberg Cheese.

Berlin PJ Party

It's almost time for the Berlin Pajama Party which this year,  is January 27th.  Get up early or come the night before,  'cause it runs from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. when the participating stores offer many sales and discounts.   But, you have to be wearing your PJs, bathrobes, slippers, etc. to qualify!!  At 10:00 the sale is over and they go back to their regular prices.

It's a fun time to be had by all, and is a very popular event in Berlin each year.

Recipe from Ohio Amish Country (repeated from Jan. 1 issue)

This week's recipe is from the Miller Family Cookbook.

Our daughter fixed this version of Waldorf Salad for our Christmas dinner.  It was
REALLY good and I was surprised to find out it came from the Miller Family Cookbook. P. 313

Yellow and red apples (do not peel)
bananas
red grapes
chunk pineapple
mandarin oranges
Drain fruits (reserving juices).  Cut the amount of fruits you need into bite sized
pieces.  Bring juice to a boil, then add:
1 c. sugar (to taste)
Then add:
lemon or peach Jello (a few tablespoons)
Thicken with Therm Flo (corn starch), not too thick. Chill.
Fold in 1/2 c. sour cream, 1 c. whipped topping
Fold into fruits.  Add just before serving:
nuts and miniature marshmallows

Really good!
